How long does it take?

So i got new DiMarzio model j pickups in my bass as well as new strings. The pickups are great as expected, but the E string from the Ernie Ball Super Slinky pack sounds rattles and it's a little annoying.

This is my first time changing the strings of my bass and i was wondering if you had to break strings in and how long it usually takes to break them? Or are Ernie Ball Super Slinkys just this way because they're 'super slinky'? the E string gauge is .100

This could be a number of fctors, but here are the leading candidates:

1. Did you change gauges or a different tensioned string set? If so, go to number two.
2. Did you adjust the neck relief and bridge?
3. Did you properly put the string on the tuning post and go downwards to give adequate pressure on the nut?
4. Has the nut been modified in any way, such as for BEAD stringing? If so, it may require a new nut.

If you did all that, then it is beyond me. Maybe a local guitar repairman may help. There are some valuable threads that can guide you step by step to show you how to properly set up a bass during string changes on this site. Good luck!
