For my Fender P-Bass, I had the original strings on them until I broke them. I didn't know about strings going dead, so I didn't care. But once I got new strings, I was amazed at how much brighter they were than my real old ones. For slapping, they make a world of difference. Now, I don't change strings that often since they cost so much, but once they start to get a real noticeable dull sound to them, I'll change them. That's just me though.

I changed to Rotosounds about 4 or 5 months ago, and they're still sounding good, and a lot warmer now they've worn in. I've also had the same set of Rotosounds on my other bass for about 9 months, and they still sound suprisingly bright. Of course, it's a personal thing, and if you don't have a problem with the sound of your strings, then don't change them.

I need to change them about every 10 hours of play (two 4 hour gigs)or they lose their tone.
They also tend to break on me after about 20 hours. It's not the bridge saddles either, does it on all my basses. I must have acidic sweat I guess. Nothing like losing the A string mid tune.

I like the sound and I'm tough on strings. There's quite a few quality brands that cost less than $20 that allow this luxury to me financially. |

D'addario XL5 on the Stingray5's (tried DR and rotosound, and they stunk on those basses. DR was cool on my Mex Jazz5 though) -> don't get changed that often because I don't play that often on those basses.
Strings on the upright get changed every year.
On the Smith 6 I put Smith mediums that get changed every 30-40 days (12-20 gigs/month). I'd love to change them more often, but can't afford to at 43€ a set....
Can't let them on more than a month and a half, frets love to eat strings.
