The best ay I can think of would be to buy different strings

Take a knife and cut the silk off.

And then buy DR strings that don't have silks.

Isn't the silk there to keep the string from unwinding?

The Roto's RB45 are identical to the nickel swing bass 66 (light blue silk) but without the silk. But I do not know if there is a equivalent for the Steel Roto's 66.

There is no cheap alternative for the Steel Swing Bass 66. The silk was originally there to hold the string together, but is only there now for appearances.

How to remove it? Cut it off with a knife or razor blade. You will probably score the strings, though, which will alter strength and sound, so you may need to try several times.

Fire fire is right, just burn them off. I have done that with flatwounds which look pretty tatty after a few years. Take em off the bass first, Billybass
