i recently bought a second hand 5 string, complete with a set of sexylicious pink strings, only problem is that theyre a bit loose (particularly the E and B strings) and was wondering if it would be possible to take them off, cut them to size and then restring them? |

| | | they could have been taken off and re fitted, or the material theyre made out of could be the result of the floppiness. i know that when i took mine off and re fitted them, they didnt sound as tinny afterwards. be careful you dont cut too much off if you are cutting them!
id like some coloured strings. maybe some striking blue, red or yellow ones

so if i cut the strings down a bit and refitted them that would be fairly straight forward would it? no side effects to speak of? |

The only way to get a tighter B and E strings are to either go up in string guage, raise you're action, get better strings than those floppy pink DR's, or tune the string up to a higher pitch.
Some of these options are more practical than others, but having less wraps around the tuning peg won't do anything to help w/ increased tension. |

"Longer" has nothing to do with anything other than the distance from nut to bridge saddle... ie. scale length.
If the strings are tuned the way you want, and the strings don't seem to have enough tension, you can either get different strings, or get the same kind in a heavier gauge, or raise the action.
If the original poster is using a set with a .120 or .125 B string, he can get a .130 from DR. That's what I do. Buy a 4-string set and add a single .130. Mix and match until you get a set that suites you.
Hmmm... just checked and DR only makes the .130 B in Black. So sorry, no pink for you!
GHS will sell you any string they make as a single, and it doesn't take long to get them either.
Either give up the pink, or change your technique to deal with the floppy pink.
Something about that last sentence just sounds wrong. Quote:

It's tip #88 in his book, "101 Bass Tips: Stuff All the Pros Know and Use."
He seems to think PC board spacers worked for him when he was looking for increased tension on the B and E strings on his (non-signature) basses.

Why have one colour when you can have them all? |
