I am searching special SS strings

Sign in to disble this ad
hi guys,

im allergic against nicel and im searching "smooth" stainless steel strings. roundwounds not flatwounds
(i play those on my pbass to get the jamerson sound)
more high tension than loose noodel strings (so no tapewounds)

i want a "modern, roundwound" sound in 50-110 gauge

warwicks are zero smooth. so are pyramid SS strings.
rotosounds are "ok" to me .... has anybody played those gauge "R Cocco" or "Dean markley blue steels" ?

i want to play funky, reggae and punk/rock stuff on it (sometimes with a pick, so no elixiers or similar ones, that looses its coating)
(...also etudes, but only once a month or so ;-) )

would be great if you could help me out or recommend me some strings

greets

chrispy

hmm...the only thing that comes to mind is maybe the Ritter Swordsteel strings:

http://www.ritter-basses.com/ritter-...es-strings.htm

They're a little lighter gauge than what you're looking for, but they have a very even tension string to string, and a smoother feel than most rounds. Expensive, but they last a long time too.

I'm not sure of a smooth one, but I can definitely recommend that you do not get Sadowsky Steels, they are really rough strings!

Do you mean smooth sounding, or smooth feeling?

Ernie Ball Regular Slinkys are 50-70-85-105 and Power Slinkys are 55-75-90-110. I like Slinkys, I've tried the Power Slinkys before, they sounded good, but were too thick for my tastes, I usually prefer 100s or even 95s.

If you're going for smooth feeling, I think your best bet is the D'Addario Half Rounds. Regulars are 50-70-85-105, and Heavys are 55-75-90-110, just like the Slinkys.

It depends on if you're talking about the black labeled strings or the newer blue labeled ones. The black labeled ones are indeed a little rougher to the touch but the newer blue labeled SS strings are a bit smoother and more flexible as well. I use both on my basses.

If you like Rotos, I can really recommend the Solo bass pressurewounds. Very close to the Swing Bass rounds in tone (maybe a more in your face upper midrange rather than extreme "zingy" highs), but just a bit smoother feel. I've just put a set on my fretless and I was pretty sure I'd like them, but I'm even more impressed than I expected to be.

I started using the D'Addario Pro Steels about 2 years ago and have not looked back. They are amazing strings that last quite a long time. They are not coated, but mine last me about 6-8 months still sounding real good. They are not harsh at all.

I don't think there are any smooth feeling SS roundwounds in existence, but try high-beams. The loose tension makes up for a lot. If you can tolerate the feel of Rotos, then the high-beams should feel great.

Also, maybe give the coated DR (color-coated ones, or Bootzillas) strings a shot. They are not like the Elixir coating, and you won't see a lot of stringy sheds when you pick. I don't like the tone on the colored strings too much though.

The Ritter Swordsteels feel very smooth

The Bootzillas are simply horrible starting from the tacky, sticky tactile sensation to the muffled sound
