I hate strings, I like TI superalloys, but they still lack something

I hate strings, I like TI superalloys, but they still lack something..


..and I don't feel like buying another package of strings for 30 bucks

They lack bottom!
- I like the bottom in flatwounds
- I like the roundwound growl
- I could use a little bit of a thump
- I like nickel over steel

I've tried DR lo-riders before, but they were only available in steel and not really smooth. I would say that they were rather grindy and clangy. I play with a strong attack when I'm in a band situation. The TI's lack a bit of bottom, but are perfect otherwise: smooth, pretty growly and nice tension/feel.


What would you suggest?

Equipment: jazz bass with dimarzio model J's, 2 switches to stack both pickups seperatly in serie/parallel.

Every set of strings has strenghts and weak points. I use superalloys on two basses at the moment, and my experience with them is that they are very even across the bass. I think that the obvious solution is to turn up the bass knob on your amp.

BTW, I've had Model J's in two different basses and they weren't the deepest sounding pickups. I think that the low end was less pronounced than on the UltraJazz set, for a reference to another DiMarzio product.

I've tried TI SAs and to me, they had plenty of bottom...

sadowsky flats are brighter than alot of flats(not as bright as TI though) have alot of bottom and are not as tense as most flats(still not as loose as TIs though)

My question is how are you hearing the lack of bottom? Played through a bass amp and cab, or a recording of your bass played through a HiFidelity stereo system?

The difference is amazing.

The above is a link to a 482kb MP3 I made of my MIM-P with EXL-220 broken-in rounds, and a DiMarzio DP146 Will Power Middle in parallel mode. Played through a decent stereo it has a full, rich bottom.

To my ears, this one with rounds has more bottom than TI Jazz Flats on the same bass. All the samples are in the same directory on my web site if you want to browse them.

Recorded, is has definitly enough bottom. When I recorded it straight into the harddiskrecorder though.

I've looked after the bassplayer edition to see how they said the tonal guide was and they agreed with me: bass wasn't really there. This is also a perfect example of how different everbodies ears are.

Maybe it is time for me to change the neck pickup? I wasn't always too fond of that one.

DR Sunbeams are nickel plated. I use them on all my basses....fretted and fretless.
