I Hated to Do It...But....

...I had to change my strings!

Actually, I love the sound of new strings, but there is definitely something to an old, dead string. (Think Benard Edwards, James Jamerson, et al). They're thumpy with no overtones. That's a sound.

Recently, I asked TB's what their favorite bass sound was on this video where I use a few different basses. The response was 4-1 on the first -- which is an old 62' reissue P bass. (1989)

BUT, I completely forgot, that the strings on that bass were about 4 years old when I recorded with it!

They finally got to the point where they were fraying and they had to go. (I recently re-strung all my otjer basses so i didn't even have an old set I could switch on).

Now I'll need a good 6 months to break them in.

Maybe if I polish the fingerboard with the strings on?

Anyway, just another perspective. Sometimes what works best isn't necessarily the newest and/or the most expensive.

I have a bass with old dead strings on it. I have a bass with flatwounds on it. I have a bass in which I always prepare for a gig with clean, zingy strings. Provided you have at least two basses, no reason you can't have one bass with dead strings, and one with not dead strings.

Thats why Its great to play nothing but flats on all my basses...I never change them Every once in a while I might try a diffrent brand for S&G like the new Fender flats I might get today.

And flats don't fray! (But the only bass I have flats on is the Hofner -- which I believe is mandatory by law).

Flats FTW.

The ones on my basses vary in age from 6 months, to 3 to 6 years, to 38 years. All are hanging in just fine, thanks.
