I know little about strings, help me out?

I play for an Eastern band and use a Epiphone Thunderbird Pro. My strings are starting to snap left and right. I was un-prepared for this situation. So I liked the sound loads before, and i would like to keep it. But i don't know what strings to use. My teacher uses flatwounds on a fretless bass, and i really like the sound of it. But mine is fretted. Would it make the same sound? Or would it change. The strings i had before (the ones that came with the bass) were good. The sound was tight and bright, yet warm and full. Now remember i play for an eastern band, witch means lots of minor scales and playing, with a mellow tone (usually).

Any recommendations?

well

i can only speak for myself here but,i have used a set of DaDarrio Chromes on the last five basses, even removing and remounting on 2 of them,,and never a problem even when a bass had`lightweight' tuners and i went back to open geared tuners(i DID with one brand;string broke at the tuning peg)

and i've tuned those string flat as well as a full step down and back up to standard=still working great tonally,,i DO have a dif. brand of halfrounds on a P bass and they are great in their own way but i havent swapped em back and forth 6-7 times and beat on em for two years either,i love those`Chromes'

i think i recall someone else here having a breakage issue with a T-Bird and it was the bridge saddle=?do a search

Have the bridge saddles checked for burrs. String breaking frequently is very unusual. I think flats sound dull and well, flat. Dont like them, but some do. If you liked the sound before strings started breaking, stick to roundwounds, since thats what youve had on it. What brand where you useing?

What are the other instruments you are playing with? If they are acoustic stringed instruments like ouds and violins, i would think flats would sit beautifully underneath everything and give you a mellow thumpy tone that would be more traditional sounding.

But without knowing more about the music it's hard to say, and in the end your ears are the only thing that matter. Ask your teacher if he has a spare set of old flats to try- that way you can compare them to the sound of rounds, which you've tried already.

Well there's a Keyboard and a Piano, drums, me and vocals. I think a more humble sound would be really good for our setup. But i didnt know if flat wounds would sound **** on a fretted bass
