I normally play a 6 string, but the church praise band needs a bass player. I am currently borrowing one but need to purchase one myself. I was wondering what were some affordable but decent bass strings out there. I know all about strings for my 6 string, but have no clue about bass strings. Anybody have any experienced advice?

Good Lord, those are the MOST expensive strings out there! Ernie Balls and D'Addarios are awesome for the money IMO.

DR High Beams Stainless Rounds .100's
$24-$26 at Musician's Friend or Guitar Center (with price match)

Excellent timbre, cuts through the mix of playing live.
Best sounding string I have played to date for Bass.

Ohhh, a 6-string guitar. That wasn't confusing at all.

I'm pretty much a D'addario fan across the board.

Fender 7250 sixstring set. Their 5 string sets currently are on my 5 stringers, and I am impressed with their sound and longevity. Not too expensive either.

Yes, this would be a great choice for a beginning bassist. Medium to medium-light gauge, nickel strings in a make that's readily available in most bricks-and-mortar music stores (i.e. D'Addario, Ernie Ball, GHS, etc.)

Take it from there until you get more experience on the instrument. Then you can get a better handle on the specific sound you want to develop from there...
