Try the black flats by rotosound.. Paul McCartney used them on some of the Beatls records.

La Bella 1954 flats (the classic "James Jamerson" set) - very full sounding - really full

I like the Fender Flats. Not dark too the point of being muddy, but it's hard to coax a bright sound out of them.

+1 on the Jamerson LaBellas, or the 760FLs even, if you don't want the high tension and heavy gauge. The Roto tapes aren't dark at all, they are thumpy and bright at the same time, which is what makes them unique.

Fenders are a bit brighter than the LaBellas to my ear (or a bit more transparent, for want of a better term). But both will give you a full dark tone without much top.

Rotosound Nylon Tapewounds really do this job very well.

You owe it to yourself to try the LaBella originals. Nothing gets the fundamental across more. Besides for the low darks, they're extremely musical. Some necks just don't have enough beef to take the tension. But remember, high tension means you can get by with lower action.
The Jamersons will not be a mistake.

webstrings flats are very "dead" from the get go... no one seems to trust that a 16 dollar set of flats can sound very good, but I like em. I like labellas a bit better, but the webstrings are decent, cheap, and very dead (or dark).

Nylon wound Rotos was exactly what I was thinking

McCartney played them on Abbey Road.

Hi ,
I have recently heard that there is a set of flats that have a layer of silk wound between the outer and inner wraps , anyone know what string this is as I suspect that this may give me the tone I am looking for , by the way the tone I am after is a dark upright type sound , like rotosound tapewound strings but darker with less clack

That'd be Thomastik Infeld Jazz flats you're referring to. Personally I didn't find them very "dark", at least not compared to other flats I've played. They are very low tension though, and some people say they sound like an upright. They're very nice strings, though I found them way too midrangey for my liking, and compared to other flats they sound a bit like roundwounds to my ears. Honestly of all the flats I've played I really like Labellas, and the webstrings aren't a bad substitute.

Thanks I think I will try the labellas as I dont want any strign that sounds remotely like a roundwound , just heard that Macca used labella's a lot so that can't be bad at all

Darkest I've used are the SIT Powerflats. I've switched to LaBella Jamersons for the higher tension and stronger thump. But as far as dark goes, it's Powerflats FTW!
