Post I need a set of nickels...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello

I need a set of nickelplated bass strings, 45-105. They should vibrate very nice, they should not be rough, the tension should be medium.

I had a set of GHS Boomers and Fender 7250s and they were nice, but I want to try something else.

Any Recommandations?

Thanx

Try DR Nickel Lo-Riders or DR Sunbeams. I suggest sunbeams.

What's the difference between those?

Curt Mangan has some of the best strings ever. Anything from flats to nickels to stainless steel, they're just great. I have a nickel plated roundwound set on my 6, and I love them.

I put a set of Sadowsky Nickels on my CIJ '51 re-issue and love them...They are running a string sale right now as well.

I use the XL-170s (.045, .065,.080,.100) because the lighter gauge allows me to be a bit more expressive. I don't think there's any appreciable sacrifice in the tone department, either.

Sound quality, playability, price...everythings' there IMO.

IMO the D'Adds are very much like EB Slinkies, only a little cheaper, and they last a little longer.

I think I'll get some DRs, too many people say that they rule, but I have to like them...
What's the difference between hex and roundcore? In tension?

roundcore will have more overall tension (because of higher mass), but hexcore will feel "stiffer" (because of being more "locked together")

Which one will vibrate better, more?

I just swapped out a set of stainless steels to sunbeams.

I must say i didn't get use to the sound initially as i felt the steels "zing" missing.
But after 2 hrs, it seem to hold that low end and brightness without being overly harsh when i push up the treble.
It is also very soft touch playing strings.
Gonna try a set of sadowsky and see how it compares soon.

I've got a few sets of strings in the Accessories FS forum - you could try out the D'Addarios for example with minimal investment. I'm just selling because they're 4 string sets and rather than get a low B for them to go on my 5 I'm using different strings.

I see you're using nickel Lo-Riders, how are they? I play funk and I have a Jazz Bass.

+1. You really need to try a set of the Rock Bright Nickels. Sound great, last a long time, and are inexpensive. That just about covers it!

They're wonderful - some of the best nickel plated strings IMO, but I've never heard them on a 34" scale bass, nor with single coils so my experience is about as different as they come. They do funk nicely on a Roscoe SKB thought

I'm pretty sure round-core strings have lower tension, compared to hex-core with the same gauges...

I recommend Thomastik-Infeld Superalloys... I went through a period where I tried out all the nickel string and found TI Superalloys to sound the best... quite warm, yet retaining decent articulation after they've been broken-in. They also last a long time, which is a good thing cause they're a little more expensive than Boomers.
