I play metal / Rock which ones should I get

Sign in to disble this ad
I searched the forum a bit to find another thread, so if this is a repost, I apologize.

I play metal / Rock I have no idea which strings I should buy. I read a little bit on Rotosounds swing bass 66. I have only been playing for about 9 months, and dont know to much about strings. I have a cheap epiphone bass right now. Any tips would be much appreciated.

Rotosounds are classic. Also, try Ernie Ball.

I'd go with DR Hi-Beams. Low tension and a nice bright sound!

I love slinkys I find the THE STRING if you want a for sure good sound that won't dissapoint, however I'm rockin some DR Lo-Riders which are great, nice tension for those fast riffs on the E string. Also DR sunbeams seem pretty slick too.

Stainless DR Lo-Riders are the best for rock IMO.

I've been using nickels a lot... steel has a nice sound but has way too much finger noise. I like to have a trebley sound but the noise is annoying.

When I deign to use round wound strings I use Rotosound Swingbass 66's. Very nice string, one of the best for rock in my opinion and experience.

However, some of the thinner wristed bassists about complain about the string tension and that the Rotos are rough. I personally haven't had a problem with either of those complaints but if anything it built up my callouses.

+1 on the rotosounds, I used to use them and they are really good.
Nowadays I use Warwick Black Label and I believe they sound really good for rock too.

Rotosounds, or DR's are my fav, unless you need special tapers, then there's LaBella.
These are my fav's. My main gig is a hard rock band. I sit in w/ a blues band also.

The Rotosound strings are harsh on the fingers. They are not "slippery" like DRs or D'addarios. They do sound nice though.

Which kind/guage of Dr Lo-Riders are you guys talking about for Metal? I'm particularly interested that peaveyuser mentioned that it has a nice tension for playing fast on the E.

Rotosound are dead, no tone at all
Ernie Ball are kind of flabby
D'addario are great
Boomers are awesome!

Rotosounds are pretty good for the old-skool clanky metal sound. They go dead fairly quickly though, and once they're gone, it's not that nice. I've recently been using Ernie Ball Power rounds, which I like - good n growly, bit more emphasis on the fundamental note. Just ordered a set of DR Lo-Riders to try out though - been hearing good things about them.

your strings are an enormous part of your sound. it's going to be a very subjective and personal thing. spend the bucks to experiment with different strings and find out which strings work best for you

I'm using some D'addario rounds on mine. It gets that tone and brightness.
