and I'm not looking back. I can't believe I've been playing with roundwounds this whole time! My bass sounds like a bass now.

Well, I find I like certain basses better with rounds (like my Rics) and others with flats (like my Fenders). Depends.

Just put a set of Fender 9050's flats on my Ric 4003 and and I like them WAY better than the Roto Swing 66 SS rounds that were on there. Still has all the Ric growl you could want, but has a fuller sound and feels great. At only $20, you should give it a try IMHO.

I like flats but I love nylon tapewounds.

Welcome to the flats coalition!

I absolutely love flats after stringing up my SR5 with them. Would have never thought of doing this had it not been for TalkBass.

+1
I have a set of Labella Beatle Bass strings with nylon on one of my Hofner HCT-500/1 and they sound awesome.

Agreed, love flats, but still use rounds for the band I'm in. I really need a cutting aggressive sound.

same with me!! started reading about this kind of strings over here about 8 months ago and decided to try them.. best thing i did!

have a spare brand new set that i will put in my precision deluxe when i get tired of the round d'addario's i have in it.. been reading reaaly awesome things about fender precisions with flats.

will buy another set when i get tired of the round rotosounds i have in my stingray to give it a try.

then i will have all my basses strung with flats

Huh. I had exactly the opposite experience when I tried flats on my fretless 'Ray. All the life went out of it... no 'mwah,' no sustain, no cut, none of the singing quality I love, just a colorless, muddy thud. I guess this works for people going for a really old-school (Jamerson) kind of sound. But while I'm the first person who will argue that EBMM's can be used for any kind of music, it just doesn't seem like "old school" is an instinctive fit for the signature MM sound.

IMHO, IME, YMMV, ETC.

It was weird because when I got the pbass that currently has the flats the dude that sold it to me the bass came with flats. First thing I did was restring my bass with roundwounds. I kept the flat strings but never thought twice about putting them back on. I've starting to listen to my tone and other band's tone and I thought maybe they had something to do with the strings. I grabbed the flats and put them back on. I love 'em I just don't know what type of strings they are. Can anyone help me ID these flats?

IME, it really depends on the flats that you were using. Certainly, if I slapped on a set of LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats, I'd get that old school thump. However, the D'Addario Chromes are very bright and could certainly make some nice mwah on my fretless MM/J Carvin (However, I now have RotoSound Tru-Bass 88 strings on that one now) and didn't kill the great zingy tone of the Stingray. Sure, it wasn't as zingy as if I had brand new rounds on it, but it sits in the mix better now for my purposes.

They're D'Addario Chromes. My current favourite.

I think if someday I can afford to have a collection of basses again I'll have a "flats bass" for those occasions where it might be appropriate (maybe on a fretless where I wanted to emulate more of an upright sound). I tried those Chromes on a fretted 55-02 years ago, and I just don't think I'll ever be able to get the fretted "tone I hear in my head" with flats... too addicted to the upper harmonic content!
