Question I wanna try some flats.

Sign in to disble this ad
I am pretty new to the bass and have been slowly finding my own sound. I have yet to try flatwound strings, but they might be the ticket for me.

I am looking for a warm sound. Gauge-wise, I have tried super light(D'addario), they were too light. I have tried heavy(elixer), love the tone, but is just barely too heavy for my liking(tension wise).

I would love some recommendations. I play a Lakland DJ jazz 4 string out of a hartke 115.

Thanks guys!

Flats are gonna have a very different sound from Elixir rounds. Warm, thick, & dull sounding is what you'll get with flats - think "thud thud." Great sound for certain things, but if you love the sound of Elixirs, I don't think flats are what you want.

That said, EVERY bassist should try out flats at some point or another. It's a whole other side to the bass guitar.

What else can I say? Labella Deep Talkin' Flats.

Not necessarily the Jamerson set...the Deep Talkin' set.

They are what flats are intended to be.

If you want to get in without a big investment, try webstrings flats, www.webstrings.com. I have been very happy with their strings and you cannot beat the price. labella's are awesome too, and I recently put TI flats on a 6 string and they are amazing, but very different from the webstrings and labellas, which are both high tension. But all of them sound good and get better as they get "played in." In fact, I am waiting on a set of webstrings flats right now (hopefully tomorrow) for my P/J bass. I do eventually want the TI's for it though because I am digging the low tension. Got my TI strings at bassguitarstrings.us , their service was great and the prices are the best I have found yet, although the TI's are expensive no matter where you go!

Labella 760FLs are a nice set tension wise. They are not super light but are definitely not extra heavy. And they have the tone on my P bass. The best price I know of for them is here:
