I wish anytime you go into the music store, the basses would be strung with either new or cleaned strings. I say this as I've played some instruments with pretty dead strings, and because of that, I find it hard to tell the full measure of slap/pop tone or clarity possible from that instrument.
I had a bass which I really loved and I didn't think it had "that slap sound" and *almost* sold the thing because of it, until I heard about new/boiled strings. Once I did that, all the tones I hoped for came out of the bass I almost sold. I learned a valuable lesson, but others may not know about the tremendous impact strings have on the sound of the bass. Much more than strings on guitars, IMHO.
With instruments I am not familiar with or have owned, I suppose I can assume they have some slap and spank in 'em. And some I am familiar with (Music Man, Jazz Bass), dead strings are of no concern, as I know the kinds of sounds they are capable of.
I just tend to think that it is hard to get the full character of a bass you are considering buying and its sonic possibilities without clean strings.
I love muddy, greasy, dirty 10 year old string-sound too. I think I can get that from any bass, given enough time. Great slap sound is much more in question, IMHO.
Am I wrong for wanting new or cleaned strings on the basses in the stores? |
