Ibanez Soundgear 5 string

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey,

I just picked up an Ibanez soundgear 5 string bass and the strings are sounding hallow and they sort of buzz. Should i get new strings? if so, what kind? I am looking for a smoother sound.

Thanks!

Hey buddy, I use Ernie Ball regular slinkys on mine, but they may not be as smooth as you want them. I've often thought of putting flatwounds on mine to get a smoother tone. You may also want to make sure you set it up properly as that's usually the cause of the 'buzz'. I had to set mine up when i first got it, the harmonics weren't even set and the string height was all over the place.

I've used various strings on my SR535 and other Ibanez SR's, that I've owned over the past couple of decades. There hasn't been a single string I've tried that completely eliminates that hollow sound you're talking about. What helped solve that problem was ousting the MK-1 preamp for a Bartolini NTMB system. I've read about other people using IIRC, Audere preamps, and those working as well. Search the pickups forum and I'm sure you'll find the thread on it in the archives somewhere.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "sort of buzz," and when does it buzz?
