Same problem here with the Elixirs. They were nice but I really didn't like it once they got torn. It is really beyond me how guitards use those.
While my SRX705 was my main bass it would only get rotosound round steels 45-130 and kick viciously in the butt. I have tried a LOT of strings on this bass but I was the most happy with those:
Dean Markley SR: Cool, but expensive especially. Moreover the gauge felt weird since it is :.044 .060 .078 .098 .125
DR: I liked the Lo riders a bit more than the Hi beams. Nice, not as long lasting as the rotos but with really musical breakup. However, expensive.
Ernie ball: I had the worst luck with them. They went dead really fast.
Gibson: A nice alternative to the rotosounds and little cheaper. I have never seen them before or after the one time I got those though.
GHS boomer: they felt too low tension.
D'addario: Very nice, slightly more expensive than the rotos, but a bit darker.
Warwick red label: excellent alternative to the rotos on a very similar price.
To be honest, I would love to try flats with these but I never had the opportunity.
