Iconic String Choice

Sign in to disble this ad
I just ordered a Hofner Icon and I don't want to use the stock rounds that come on it (why they put rounds on a Hofner is beyond me). I'm trying to sort through all of the threads I've read so far and its leaving me a little confused. I realize I can just buy the Hofner sets that a couple of companies offer but if I want more choices I need more information. Do I need to use short scale strings or medium scale strings? I know the Icon is a short but I've read somewhere that because of the "trapeze" style bridge, mediums are required. I was also wondering if I can trim down an old set of D'Addario chromes I have and use those until I get some tapewounds or something?

LaBella actually has a flatwound string called Beatle Bass.

You need medium scale (32") strings; that trapeze bridge requires longer strings.

Yes...the trapeze bridge results in longer string length...you need medium scale strings. I strongly recommend the Labella Hofner flats, as they are made precisely for this model bass. Labellas have the Hofner/classic sound! You can always cut down full scale strings if you wish, but I don't see the point. Order what you need the first time. I'm not sure where to go for medium length tapewounds. Juststrings.com has the largest inventory I know of - try them.

LaBella produces Beatle Bass tapewounds also, the BB line has flats, rounds, and tapes. As Pilgrim said, check out juststrings.

From anyone who has used both flats and tapes on their Hofner: what were your impressions comparing the two. I've recently converted to flats (2years ago) and now I won't play anything else. What is the playing experience like with tapes?
