Identifying multi-color wrapped strings

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently acquired a great Jazz bass, and I like the strings it came with, but I have no idea what they are. I have done a search and looked through many many posts on this subject, but no luck. I would really appreciate it if you could help me. It is a four-string set, round wound and I believe, based on sound, color, and smoothness, either nickle or nickle coated. The balls are dark grey, and there is blue silk wrapping immediately above them. at the peghead end, the E string is wrapped with red silk, the A with blue, the D with black, and the G with dark green. I've never seen anything like this! I contacted CS at Juststrings and DR, but no luck. I really like these strings, and though I do not plan on replacing them right away (I like 'em "well used"), I would like to have a spare set on hand. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like D'Addario SloWounds. They don't make them any more. I used to use them and loved them (except, being D'Addarios I had to special order extra-long sets in order to use them string-through-body). I understand that D'Addario stopped making the SloWounds because they decided to use that technology on all their bass strings. That means that D'Addario considers their regular nickle strings (the XL series) to be the same strings as the old SloWounds.

Having started using and really liking DR strings since I used SloWounds, I haven't played a set of XLs in a long time, so I can't comment on whether the XL sets are the same as the SloWounds. Heck, it's been so long, I don't even remember exactly why I switched to DR, except the problems with special orders.

Thanks, JTE That figures, since D'Addarios (Chromes, and XL's) are what I usually use on my Fender basses. I use Ernie Ball's on my MusicMan basses, because I like them too, and it seems right somehow I wonder if the colored silks was what D'Addario used before they went with the colored "donuts"? Hey--thanks for responding--I can lay this search to rest!
