im looking for a explanation of the words related to strings

Maybe im a noob at searching, but i didnt find a thread like it...

what im looking for is explanation of all the words like tension and gauge what do they mean? please dont use to complicated words, so people with english as second language still get a good understanding of it

gauge... means the thickness of the string (equal to diamater of the string on the outside of the windings) so for example .045 would be 45/1000ths of an inch.

tension... refers to the pull on the string when tuned to pitch..

so thicker strings have more tension... and some brands have more or less tension than others. thicker strings have more tension, because..as you know... thicker strings are for lower notes... so it takes more pull to get thicker strings up to pitch.

Another way to think about it is...

Gauge is the thickness of the string under your finger .

Thicker gauges will produce lower tones...

smaller or thinner...brighter tones

That is why you have variations in strings such as Medium, Medium Light, Heavy..A lot of times 1 or all of the strings are changed .

As far as tension. Tension is how the string feels under your finger. Some strings have lighter tension..making them feel easier to push down to fret. The higher tension strings are stiffer when depressed and a touch more difficult to depress.

To be honest I only notice a string tension issue when playing longer scale basses like 35"
