So i went and bought a pair of D'Addario to try them out...and didnt realize till i already got home put the strings on it and cut them to the right length....that the strings start getting thinner before the nut....the thik part goes up to halfway up the 2nd fret and then its thin the rest of the way up..i have a feeling this is gonna cripple my playing on these strings...is there any way to fix it(which i dont think there is w/o buying new strings) cause i dont want to spend another $20 on strings...and rather put the old ones on

no way to change it - save em and maybel you'll get a shorter scale bass someday to put them on, or if you're in a real pinch when your strings break you'd have an extra. There isnt anything wrong with playing strings like that, I dont think, other than the giant bump down when the string changes size might affect your comfort level and the playability of the bass...

No chance that your bass gives you the choice of top loading the strings or going through the body is there? If so and you went through the body you could change to top loading and get some more length. If not, I think you're stuck, but it may not be bad. I did the same thing, although only about 3/8" worth, and it didn't make anything weird or make it so I couldn't intonate it. If it's your only bass and you used up your string budget for a while, I'd say put them on and see. At best you'll learn from it and it'll be ok, at worst you'll learn from it and you can put your old ones back on.
