After years of playing rounds and with a pick, I just could not get the smooth sounds I hear on so many recordings and having set up my little studio in the last year or so and doing a lot of experimenting with pre amps, Sans amp DI's etc.

While rounds were fine for Live gigs I have been finding its hard to get a good solid clean recording with them.

SO I have converted to Thomastik Infeld JF344's and I'm not looking back........
Recorded with an LA610 solo tube pre amp into a Motu interface using Logic. (I even had the treble rolled halfway off on the guitar and Eq's a little 1-2k cut and some HF roll off as well.

1984 Japan RB999......love the pickups

That's a nice sound bite. Thanks, TI's are on my list of strings to try already, this helped.

After experimenting and researching how to get the tone you hear on so many recordings........Im happy now!
I had the strings muted slightly just over the nut and treble turned halfway down on bass using my fingers......so I could get a little more edge if needed using a pick, or throw on some stainless flats instead but the tone is so much more solid and cleaner than the rounds I was fussing with to get a clean sound with no rasp/squeeks. I used a tube pre as well (LA610 Solo with the gain wide open.

Sounds similar to Chromes. I like it. Bright flats are not rounds.

TI flats turned me around, too. I was a roundwound-only guy for 20 some-odd years, but a friend recently talked me into giving flats a try and suggested TIs. I'm not using them on every bass, but I do really like them for soul and R&B stuff on my '51 P reissue.

I just tried RotoSound flats on my Jazz bass and I'm liking that, too. A little higher tension and brighter tone than the TIs.

When I read "pick", that's not at all the tone I imagined.

Very smooth.

That was finger playing on the sample. With a pick it would be a little brighter. I was surprised as I always thought flats were too dark and I had the treble only half way up and thought it still had good clarity. In a mix with more going on I would prob turn the treble up more.
