installing flats

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys. Well, I got my first set of flats. I'm going to put them on tonight. Stupid question but should I put them on just as I have put round wounds on for the last 30 years or so? Nothing different in the way they get wound around the tuner. I can't imagine anything different but thought I'd ask.
TIA TB

Cool, thanks guys. I do have a question though for XL chrome users. I had a couple of problems putting them on my 99 American Fender P. First, it's a string through body bridge so I started to install the strings that way but the E string was way to short. The fuzz that covers the string as it tapers down at the tuner end was WAY overhanging the bridge, to the point were the start of the fuzz was about even with the first fret. I swaped bridges with another one that loads the stings through the back of the bridge and this cured that problem. I aso had a problem at the bridge end of the string as well. Where the string passes over the saddle it still had fuzz on it for a good eight of an inch. That didn't seem right so I just removed the fuzz back a little ways untill the string was exposed far enough to sit on the saddle by itself. Are these things normal with these stings?

I've used Chromes on my MIA Precision for quite some time now. I always string thru the body, and I always have to remove a bit of the blue binding so it's just the bare string that's passing over the nut slot. I consider it perfectly normal, and I've not experience any negatives to doing this.

When I installed my chromes on my Badass II Bridge, I also had to cut back about 1/8" of the silk wrapping on the E string to fit into the nut. No big deal.

I have to say you guys totally get my respect that use the flats. I just can't get into them. I got my Fretless and played the flats that came with it(which could've been the problem right there..maybe I'll try some later on)..but I just love the sound of the Roundwounds I put on it.

Cool, thanks for the input guys. Demon Hunter, I know what you mean about the rotosounds. This is an experiment for me but I can say that so far I'm liking the flats. This Sunday at brand practice will be the real test thou I can't see how a precision, flat's and a vintage SVT rig is going to sound anything less then awesome.

I personally can't get enough of my flats! I do everything with them from thumpin' to slappin'. I always liked the mellower tone of an old pair of rounds and the flats deliver with that tone.

Well, the one thing I can't imagine doing with the flats is slapping. I can't wait to try them out on some classic rock and some country type tunes though.
