Installing flats - first time

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a set of Chromes I'd like to install.. is there anything I need to know about installing flats? Is the procedure any different than rounds?

I think I recall reading some stories about people who had installed flats incorrectly and had them stretch out, rendering them worthless which is why I ask

thanks

As far as I've experienced just install them the same way as rounds ... the only issue I could see would be if you're running them string-through-body, since I've heard that flats have some problems with that.

Just string them like you'd do with any set of rounds. Flats always sound better when they are worn in, so don't instantly judge the tone.

Make sure you bend the string at a right angle a 1/2" before where you cut them or thy might unravel completely.

+1

you don't get the real flats tone til you've had them on for a while. the Chromes can initially be a bit clanky but that goes away after a while and they really begin to sing.

I don't think Chromes would even make it through-body. My bass has a 34" scale and a bridge that goes either way. With them top loaded there is only about 1/2" - 3/4" between the nut and silk.

Other than that, I don't think there's any special process, they install just like rounds.

I put a set of D'ADDARIO'S on Yamaha BB404. I absolutly hated them. I darned near cried. Over ones louder than the fundamental notes, more harmonics than exist on the planet. They just plain sucked big time.
I posted here and was calmed dow. they were better in three days, still sucked but not as bad.
Way better in a week, almost useable.
Fine after two or three weeks, still more liveley than some flats, but soundf great.

Best of Luck,
Wesley R.
