what would be the effects, bad or ok, with the nut issues taken into consideration?

I've actually been interested in doing this.
Might need a new nut with thinner slots, obvious intonation adjustment. It'd probably be just fine, you might have trouble finding strings that are thin enough for and F at your local shops though.

thanks for that. a 7 string set might yield a usable F type string.
(wonder what those 9/10, etc. guys do for replacements?)

You could buy a regular 4 string set and order individual C and F strings from juststrings.com. This would save you from having to deal with the low B and might be cheaper.

As for the setup, I tuned my 5 string EADGC. The nut was fine, but I had to give it a new setup (truss rod, action, and intonation).
