Well, here it is, time for a new set a strangs. The coating is coming off the elixirs. Thinking of going to tapewounds. Havn't made a deffinite choice. It would be that or another set of Elixirs. I have read some negative things about the tapes. Mostly the point of a hum or hiss due to the grounding problems. Still not sure. Im on a pretty tight budget, so I really only want to spend the money once. But, those black tapewounds sure would look good on my ibanez sr 500.
What do yall think?

Unless you play with a lot of treble the grounding problems shouldnt be an issue. I like the Rotosound Trubass a lot, but these are flats, where as I think the Labellas and Fenders are rounds under the tape. The Rotosound site has a sound clip of them, here is the link http://www.rotosound.com/tru88.html (I'm posting this link a lot recently, seems like tapes are getting very popular!)

Thanks for the info. Mostly, the reason I want to try tapewounds is for a lower, little less bright tone. I wish I could tell if the elixirs were the .45-.105 or .50-.105. There is such a small increment i guess no way to tell by naked eye or are they.

I'm sure you would like them then. The gauge difference probably wouldnt be noticeable, but if you have a pair of calipers you may be able to measure them.

If the gauge is .45- .105 and I went to the heavier .50 -.105
would i have to have a set up and some nut work done? If so I may have to opt for the smaller gauge simply because of budget issues.
