I just picked up a Jack Casady in a trade this week and I've got a set of TI Flats on order for it. In the meantime, I've been playing it as is.
It came with Rotosound 88's on it and between the size, texture and tone of those strings, I wasn't enjoying the bass at all. My other basses have a mixture of strings on them, some wear flats and some rounds, so I don't have anything against either type.
After checking the mail for the strings today (and of course they aren't there) I remembered I had an old 2+2 headstock bass sitting around with an almost new set of S.I.T. Rock Brights (nickel) on it.
Without hesitation I stripped those strings off and installed them on the JC. After a setup, I started playing the JC with the Rock Brights.
Now, I doubt the TIs will ever be installed on that bass. It's absolutely wonderful as is. The feel is a whole lot better and the sound has totally opened up.
I can actually hear a usable difference with the varitone now! With the Rock Brights, by using the varitone, I can go from a pretty good flats folk tone at 50 all the way to very bright P bass sound at the 500 setting.
So... If you own, or are thinking about buying a JC, I definitely recommend giving your favorite roundwound strings a shot on it. I am very sure you'll be very happy and surprised with the sound.
Bob
