Jazz Bass: Angry Strings.

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm setting up my '74 Fender Jazz Bass for a certain project where I'd like the bass to sound "angry".

This will mostly be tuned to Drop-D, so the strings must have a fair amount of tension.

I currently have a setup with Sadowky blue labels NPS, Mediums, and have already tried on this bass in the past DR Marcus Miller Fatbeams, and Low Riders (NPS)

Since I have these at home already that I've removed from other basses, I plan on trying Sadowsky Flats (Black Label), and Fender 7250M

Which strings should I consider trying if the above don't fit the bill?

Tension must be fair, not too sparkly or clanky, but have a lively edge with low-low-mid emphasis.

Thanks for any suggestions you can add

Fodera. I use their 6-string heavy strings, so if you can find an equivalent 4-string model, get 'em.

These here?

I've never used that brand. What color are the silks? (just curious)

Sounds like you are describing Rotosound 66 to me , go for the heavy gauge and you will be fine for drop D.

No silks. Pure, unadulterated, silkless tone.

Markley Skullbusters, the Misfits strings, are pretty freaking mean sounding.

This totally sounds like you need DR Stainless steel Lo-Riders.

The rotosounds suggestion is also a good one, in fact for me those DR's are what I wanted the Rotosounds to be. Longer life, same great sound but easier on the frets and fingers.

Great low-end with a low-mid punch, agressive being the first word that comes to mind to describe them. The tension is on the high side though, if you can live with that.

It helps if they're often beaten and seldom fed.

Agree on the Roto 66. Just put some on my Jazz and set it up since I just got it off ebay and the thing sounds mean

I ended up putting on a set of heavy EH-50 (.50-.110) SS Low Riders, tuned DGCF.... perfect Just what I was looking for.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the Rotos on another bass, but for now... I'm happy with this one!

Nothing kills the anger like the silks. Like little anger mufflers, they are.

Is this the truth or are you greenin' me?

How can silks - which are nowhere near the wiggling part of the string make any difference?

My wife teased her hair once and made it VERY angry!

Another +1. Definitely an agressive sounding string.
