Jazz with flats... jazz with flats...

I've got this little voice in my head I can't get rid of.

I've got rounds on my Leduc, which is Jazz-like, and flats on my Precision, which I'll probably sell to buy an amp. But I keep wondering what a Jazz with flats would sound like. Then I came across this video (sorry if it's been posted before):

Fender Jazz Bass with Flatwounds - Fingerstyle improv test - YouTube

Not only does it sound great, but the dude plays exactly the way I dream of being able to play. Can anyone tell if that's a passive Jazz? And I read through the comments, but I'm not sure he mentions what the strings are.

I play a jazz with flats and love it. Also I'm pretty sure that's passive and it looks like he's using chromes. It looks like he's playing my bass, aside from the fretboard.

My Jazz has flats - love the sound, smooth fat and round. I have rotosounds on it at the moment but will probably change to the TI's I have currently on my Precision and fretless Squier JB-nothing wrong with the rotosounds, they just feel better to me - slightly lower tension in my experience which suits me. Enjoy!

I'm also a Fender Jazz with flats guy. After trying every brand of flats I could afford to get my hands on, and several I couldn't afford but got anyway, my silly self is back to using Fender flats. I'm just liking them the mostest these days.

T.I. Flats on my passive American Fender Jazz Bass - so smooth, such an amazing mid range character. That playing sounds super Jaco-esc! That is definitely a passive Fender.

I've had flats (Labella FL) on my 62 RI Jazz for 8 years now.....I really love the sound and feel of flats....it also seems to add some bottom and warmth that most J basses lack.

both my jazz basses have flats, TI's on one and Labella's on the other, tried rounds on both, that lasted about an hour and the flats went back on, couldnt be happier.

Does the Leduc have a Fender style headstock (4/side)?
If so, switch strings wht the Precision and see how it sounds.

Not quite:

I like the rounds on this one, though. It's the flats on the Jazz that I don't have that are tempting me ....

But putting flats on the Leduc is tempting too, yes. I'm part of the 'one bass with rounds, one with flats' crowd. It's just that the precision isn't the neck for me. So that's why I was wondering about a Jazz with rounds. Which would come after I sell the Precision for the amp, presumably. Or would I forego the new amp and go straight for a Jazz with flats ... ?

Decisions, decisions.

Both the playing and the sound work for me.
Nice!

The video sounds like brand new flats to me. I like this sound, but they lose the growl after a little while...

I have TI Jazz Flats on my Fender American Special Jazz. Love em. But I also have DiMarzio Area J's and that makes a big difference too. Im getting another Jazz soon too. I will have a passive jazz with flats and an active jazz with rounds. ALLSUM!

Usually I prefer Labella DTFs or Pyramid Gold if I've just won the lottery. But on a Jazz bass, the Chrome flats seem to gel very nicely - they have that extra "bite" that a J is ideally suited to exploit.

I always have used flats on my jazz basses although I recently put tapewounds on the Highway One and Geddy.

Ask the dude yourself. He seems to answer all questions thrown at him.

I have flats on both my Highway One and VM Jazz basses. Killer tone and cut through the mix like nothing else.
