| Try playing closer to the bridge too. I usually keep most of my main rig with a slight mid boost and play by the bridge if i need to cut through a little more. On my old crate practice amp it's a little harder to get a good tone. It's all solid state with a little 10' speaker. On this one, I leave the bass and treble flat and just open up the mids a bit more too. It's not warm, but it cuts through.
As for strings, I used to use D'addario prisms on my 6 strings. I have since, swapped to Ken Smith rock masters. I am trying out a set of Prosteels on a 4 string as well, but will probably use Smith's full time. I haven't decided yet.
What sort of tone are you getting on the 506 now? What's your price range? I've been getting packs of Pro steels for about $13 if you're on a tight budget. (In case you're wondering, I'm pushing stainless steels because I'm allergic to nickels. I thought it was in my head, but the 3 day rash on my fingers and wrists after putting on a set of XL170's proves otherwise lol)
