JazzyFunkMetal Strings??

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been playing bass for a good while but i have either played Jazz or TheFunk or Straight up metal.
but now i have found myself in a heavey metal band where i slap/pop, two hand tap, and play with my fingers...

I was wondering what strings people would recommend for this... i was thinking regular guage GHS strings b/c someone told me the GHS cut thru real well, especially with the taps.

I've never been very good at selecting strings, any input would be helpful...

Thanks
JT

I wish i could help.. but i cant, really..
em, i'm guessing a heavish gauge for drop tunings, Roundwounds, probably. Stainless Steel for brightness in the tapping? I'm not great with this either :P

Sorry i wasnt more helpful

I played the same style you play for a while. I used peavey cirrus strings and they nailed all techniques. They cut thru so well that everyone always told me to turn down. Part of that was the bass and rig but the strings did their part.

I use daddario nickel wound regular lights, when I dont have any money to drop on Dean Markleys(if you have the money order some dean markley sr2000's from just strings.com, I have one set on my 5'ver and there by far the best strings ive ever had started of super bright and have yet to die down) I hate pro steels they're super tough on your frets and fingers (in my experience), I play kind of what you play (Primus,Korn, etc.), I would prefer daddario's nickel wound over ghs, they start off sounding super bright but genrally start fading out within a month or two, ghs in the other hand start sounding dead in about a week (at least from my experiences)

I'd recommend Ken Smith roundwounds. Any of them, lol. I've never had a string brand besides Ken Smith's that could so drastically altered my tone (as much as strings can anyway). I was originally not so thrilled with my Spector Euro 6LX when I got it. It had a dead pair of EB Super Slinkies and the sounded so stale and metallic. I decided to buy a used set of Ken Smith strings from the TB classifieds and they made the bass amazing lol. All of a sudden my Spector's was growly and full with a thick low end and enough bite to cut through any mix. My only 2 basses both have Ken Smiths now and I love the tone I get from them. I play for my schools jazz band, various church bands, and jam on funk, rock, metal and whatever else under the sun in my spare time and they fit perfectly for all.

The problem I have with a lot of other brands is that I like to dig in a lot when I play and EB Super Slinkies, GHS, and D'addario's always sounded super-trebley and brittle. I'd cut straight through the mix but it would sound out of place and frankly, bad. With the Smith's, the more I dig in the more growl I get but I don't lose the low end that keeps my bass sounding bassy .

Even know I don't even know what exact line nor gauge of Ken Smiths on either bass but they sound amazing. The only downside for some is that you may have to raise your action a bit because they tend to create a little more buzz than other strings. That's not to say their low tension (super easy to bend *coughsuperslinkies*) its just the way they vibrate i guess. I suggest finding them used if you can but new is just as good if not better and obviously last longer, but I'm cheap, lol. You can find some nice deals on eBay but here's where I would shop if I ever decided to buy new

I think I said this before but I can only speak for the roundwounds (Burners, Custom, and Master series and Taper Cores). Everything else, I assume sound awesome but I'm pretty sure I haven't used them.
