Just bad luck?

Ok, i've never ever broken a string before in guitar or bass until about two weeks ago at a practise. It came as one hell of a shock as i didn't realise what had happend. I noticed it had gone at the bridge.

Anyway, i bought one string there and then at the rehearsal studios carreid on playing. I do try and change my strings regualrly about every 6 months. So i thought it was a case of old age, but tonight at a gig with 2 weeks on the clock another one gave away. It isn't the same string, but is this just bad luck?

I wasn't playing hard, with a pick or slapping or poping. It was the A string and again it let go at the bridge.

I play standard guage SS Elites.

Is this just something which happens, or am i doing something wrong?

Check that the saddle for that string doesn't have any burrs or rough edges that the string is getting snagged on. That happens sometimes.

My first thought as it happens, they get everywhere nowadays!

Checked the Saddles and the bridge over for burrs, there aren't any i can feel, and i haven't ever noticed any. I will say that the angle from the stop bar to the saddle is quite steep from where i set the intonation. Could that have an adverse affect?

Any "angle" is going to put extra wear on a string, so maybe you should check the stop bar, too, for a sharp edge, or burr, and the saddles again, right where the string meets it.

Maybe you just got a wierd set. Sounds like it was two strings from the same set, and not the same string each time. Probably REALLY rare, but you just never know. Let us know what you find. Good luck!
