Just once I wish I could buy strings locally

Walk into any music store and they have a wall of strings behind the counter. You want flats? Chromes 45-100 are your only choice. Want a five string set? No problem..... except all the E strings are 100. Want a four string set? Now you can get a 105 E string.

Just once, it would be nice to be able to buy strings locally and get them the same day. Oh well, off to the internet I go.

Tell GC to do a price match with Musicians Friend (who GC owns by the way.).

As far as strings go, yeah I wish some places would stock some different flats other than Chromes. Fender flats are very similar to chromes at half the price. It seems to me it would be a lesser risk to stock up on cheaper flats than the big name brand.

I know they price match but whats the point if they dont even carry most brands of strings in different guages. Juststrings.com is much better.

You have more choice and better pricing. I need to visit about 4 music stores before I find a set of flats in stock. Last time I bought the price was ZAR420 (~US$60)

+1 I don't understand why stores that sell Fender guitars can't sell Fender strings. I really like the Fender flats... in fact I think I like them better than chromes.

Bash 'em with a hockey stick!

Guys, its no different in Buffalo. Now I have my preferred string and I either order them from The Perfect Bass, or sometimes order them from the local music shop.

The only music shop here doesn't even sell bass strings and yet they sell basses

The ONLY place I've found that carries a good variety of bass strings in stock was Norman Music but since I don't live there anymore I've been forced to turn to the internet. I seriously wish I didn't have to wait to get my strings.

Same thing here. There are two GC's I go to...one an hour north, the other an hour south, and I just went to one looking for some strings (and a few other things). I wanted to pick up some Chromes as a matter of fact but all they had was the 45-100 and I like the extra light set much better. Not to mention the price was almost double what I could find online. I cant even get my main bass strings, DR Hi Beams because I like the extra light set in those as well. The two local mom and pop shops in my town usually dont have anything other than a few sets of usually crap to choose from.

Generally Norman Music still carries a decent selection of bass strings, although not the strings I'm using at the moment. Last time I checked Jeff Vanadagriff was running the bass department. He beefed up the string selection a tad when he took over that department.

I have 8 basses, and I love the sound of fresh new roundwounds, so I go through a lot of strings. I have had good luck finding strings on the 'Bay, & I usually buy a minimum of 10 sets at a time. This way, I always have spares, and can wait for the good string deals to pop up. There are 3 GCs near me, and rarely do they have my brand/gauge, and yes, I agree they ask way too much for strings.

When your favorite set of strings are Circle K's, you forget that you can even buy strings locally.

I haven't bought strings anywhere but JustStrings.com for years. Much better prices/selection. GC = FAIL.

I guess it's just another sign of internet sales and prices putting the squeeze on local retailers. At least two stores here used to stock way more brands and styles of bass strings, but they just can't afford to stock multiple brands/sets anymore.

Anyway, just strings, the thin man strings, and elderly have all been good online resources. I'm glad they're around.
