I have a set of EB flats on one bass and Chromes on the other and these strings have some differences. I've seen post saying these strings are exactly the same but I can hear and feel some differences and fwiw prefer the EB's.

it depends on the bass and the amp you use. some people dont care what strings they have cus their bass sucks and the sound never changes. i dont like the chromes they have a strange brightness to them i never have used the EB's or know anyone who has

The EB's are more pleasant sounding with out the upper mid harshness of the Chromes they also broke in faster and might even have just a tad less tension. The silk wrap on the EB E string just barely makes the post and that's through the bridge on my classic 50's P bass. The silk wrap on the Chromes are perfect for a 34 scale fender through the bridge.

I just got my first shorty,an epi rumblekat(luv it!) & want to move to flats. Since this bass only has neck&middle p'ups, wouldn't that little xtra brightness in the chromes be a good thing? Also the heightened tension since it's a shorty? I'm pretty new to bass but have played drums for 40 yrs. Grateful for any input

Right on both counts. As far as more treble it personal taste Chromes are bright and you may like that. My gripe with Chromes is not just brightness but the actual tone of the strings.

Thanks toneman, big help. Roto77's would be my 2nd choice but I've heard they die fast+ $45 a pop. I want my bass to stomp booty not fight for sonic space w/ the guitars.

FWIW, after trying a few different flat sets, roto 77's are my absolute favorite strings. They sound amazing, I try to use them as often as possible no matter what I'm playing. Die fast? I'm not sure "dead flats" really makes sense to me. Over time, they lose their higher end (what little they had) and go even warmer and upright bass sounding, if that's what you mean by dead, I call it perfect.

While they are similar, I've used both strings on a P-bass and the EBs are definitely different from the Chromes. The EB sounded more like traditional flats to me. When broken in, they have much less going on in the high-mids and highs. They are thumpier than Chromes IME. If I were looking for old-school flatwound tone, I would choose the EBs; if I were looking for a more versatile sound than standard flats, I would go with the Chromes.

Not true I have Roto's that are over a year old and they still sound good. Plus there's a guy on Ebay that sells them for around $27 and will get them to you in two to three days tops!

There's a ton of hear-say and information that's been proven wrong before in this thread.

Well, for the record--you can't compare one set of strings on one bass and a different set of strings of a different age on a different bass and come to any factual conclusion on differences in tone.

Ernie Ball strings are made by D'Addario. Period. That doesn't mean they are the exact same material made in the exact same way.

Exactly my point, there made for EB by D'addario but there are some differences. I was expecting the same exact string when Musicansfriend was out of stock on the Chromes and offered to send me the EB's. Pleasant surprise was I liked the EB more.
