Thanks for posting this video. While I liked them all, and i'm a long time chrome user, I was surprised by the roto's. Very "pianoesque" tone. Ordered a set 45-105 from bassstringsonline & they are now on my Am Std P. Love 'em! Apparently I love high tension strings, though. ..these things are bridge cables lol!

Labella!

1) Labella was the best to my ear.
2) Thomastik.

I didn't care for the sound of the D'Addario & Rotosound flats.

Except for maybe finger noise, I feel that those are not good reasons to use flats. To me flats are about the tone first.

Damn! I dig the sound of Rotos...i had these on my bass a few months ago and couldn't really roll with them...tension was too high for me, tone too dry...may have to give them another try...

THE STRINGS ARE NOT NEW

This thread mistakenly believes the strings tested were Fresh / New when the video was made. Not so.

Read the comments below the YouTube vid. The vid maker says THE STRINGS ARE ALL 'USED'.

I take that to mean well used, and not indicative of new-string sound. On the other hand, they're FLATS, and flats don't change tone the way used rounds will...

I might have to check out the rotos. I like the TIs over the LaBellas fingerstyle, but the opposite picked.

I liked the Fenders best. I wonder if he used the newish ones with the hex core, because I was always a fan of the old 9050s but was daunted by the more "modern" update. In this vid, they sound warmest and roundest of the bunch to my ear, with the least flatwound "click" of the bunch. YUM!

I had a light gauge set of Fender flats which I liked a lot, primarily cuz of their high tension.

The guy asked why someone would seek a flat that sounds like a round.

Yes Rotos sounded v tubular, piano /bell like. Probably a good choice on a Rick??

But I wonder just how fast they'll loose their sizzle? What do they sound like after broken in?

I had an old set of Roto flats on a P and they were very thumpy and had no highs left at all, very similar tone to dead Roto rounds, actually, but thumpier. Huge difference from the almost metallic highs when new.

Great vid!! There are always variables, but this seems like a good tool - certainly a good starting point.

Not exactly, he says:

"all strings are used bro"

For all practical purposes those strings all sounded the same. Maybe the rotos stuck out a little, but once they are in a mix...

I think a Ric would sound good with 77's. Someone should post a vid. Maybe (probably) just my hearing, but I really could hear distinct tonal qualities when listening to the vid with my eyes shut. I was really liking the vid because I would be stringing a p & could better judge what sound I was going for, as my chromes are on a thunderbird & it's kinda like apples & oranges. I REALLY like the sizzle! Has alot of rrrrrrrrr growliness. I hope it doesn't go away too soon. I don't remember the chromes having that sizzle & the 77's feel better to me. I played Sunday morning & found I needed to quiet my right hand fingering a bit. I'll post sometime in the future after they're nice & worn.
