Killing Elixirs? =o

Sign in to disble this ad
I've tried many measures to make my bass not sound so mid-rangy and trebly, and I realized that my bright, clicky, new Elixirs are to blame. I know some people rub weird food products on their strings to deaden them, but would it work on a coated string? Also, I do want a good slap tone, I just don't want the harsh tones I'm getting with my strings (mainly the C). Can someone please help me?

I've been using Elixirs for years and have never had any problems with them. What guages are you using? Also what kind of rig are you running through, as in amp/cabinet? I'm really at a loss here, so someone else chime in here and help out.

Leave them on for a year, they sound awesome at that point. Mellow but not dead.

Mess with your EQ.

Those strings are awsome.

Use your treble cut/ tone knob, that's one of the reasons why they're there.

Well, I played it on a Gallien-Kruger (not sure what model) and a Crate BT25. I turned down the treble all the way, and the G and C were still too high. I posted this a long time ago, though. I already changed out the strings. I like the tone better now.

You covered this on your other thread. If you don't want clicky trebley tone,go to flatwounds.

Well, I'd probably have to custom order flat 6 sets. Would they ruin my slap tone? I know they do on a fretless, but a fretless bass doesn't have a great slap tone, anyway.

Elixirs are bright, hi-fi, strings. That may not have been clear when you chose them. They mellow a bit over the 1st few week's playing. Nevertheless, it's possible you're playing the wrong strings.

Have you tried an envelope shaper &/or EQ adjustment to dial in the sound you are looking for?
