La Bella Acoustic Strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, I'm in need of some new strings for my acoustic bass and I want to try something different. Right now I have D'Addario phosphor bronze roundwounds and I'm not too happy with them. Mostly I need new strings because these are old and nasty, but I am looking for a different sound, something a little less metallic and more smooth, plus I just didn't like the feel of the D'Addarios.
I've heard a lot of praise for the La Bella tape wound strings and think the sound and feel might be what I'm looking for. My first question is about the gauge. On Carvin's website they are listed as 060, .070, .097, .115. I'm used to a .045-.105 gauge and I'm not sure if I want to go any bigger. Should I take the risk and try them anyway?
My second and primary question is will these sound good on an acoustic bass? If anyone has used these on an ABG please tell me what you think. I play a Michael Kelly Dragonfly, which has a pretty punchy tone and I'm looking to smooth it out.
Lastly, are there any other strings I should consider? Like the Rotosound black nylons or another type of string altogether?

Here's the link to the La Bella's if you need a reference.

I changed from the phosphor rounds to flatwound D'Addario chromes. I like the change...the sound is full, but no more "zing" when I change hand positions.

I've been using them on my Martin BC-15E and love the tone. It's a smoother sound, a little less volume, but more thump and less harsh edge. You will trade a little sustain for a fatter sound, in my opinion. They hold up well. They don't feel abnormally large, probably because of the softer feel. YMMV however. I haven't tried any of the other tapewounds you mentioned.

ok, thank you for your input. I'll probably try them out. i wish i could hear from more people who have used them on an ABG though. most people seem to use them on electrics.
