If they say not to do it, don't do it. It would cause them MORE trouble if they knew there were a problem and DIDN'T warn you. It would make no sense if the problem didn't exist, yet they warned you anyway. CYA doesn't apply. Go ahead and try it, if the strings break, good luck getting your money back. They warned you, any problems with the strings breaking are on you.

Simple answer: Yes.

Doesn't mean you will be so lucky. I would imagine there is a slight chance that as Labella is the manufacturer and has to deal with the resultant complaints that they just might possibly have a reason for putting a warning out there.

Feeling lucky? Buy a lottery ticket.

I read through the reviews here: http://reviews.harmony-central.com/r...sion+Bass/50/1

D'addario Chromes flatwounds were mentioned a couple of times as working well with this PBass.

I run the 760FM/L set on my '51 RI strung through. No problems with breakage. The FM set is 49-69-89-109.

Elderly has 'em two sets for $52.

No. In many identical threads on this site people have reported breakages, but you seem to want confirmation of what you already believe. If the strings don't break what could Labella possibly be covering their ass for? Why would they give up potential sales for an eventuality that doesn't exist?

Different companies use different materials and techniques to wind their strings so you can't generalise.

My concern would be breaking in a nice set of LaBella flats and then having to replace the broken one (free or not) and it sounding like crap next to the others.

I had set of the La Bella flats on a P-bass, strung through bridge, for a year until I decided to go back to rounds. Since I was removing the strings and not saving them, I did a test of stringing them through the body. The E, A and D strings windings split right at the severe break angle. While the strings didn't break, it sure looked like these were weak spots that would eventually break. I didn't leave the strings on to find out.

Your best bet is just to use the flatwound bass strings that LaBella has specifically designed for stringing thru-the-body..

It doesn't matter whose string it is, a flatwound E over .100" isn't going to work properly on a through-body stringing, as the load is on the windings and not the core and you don't get a clean break angle.

Just look at it. It's obvious there's a problem. Will the core part? Maybe, maybe not, but it's still effed-up.

Core ductility seems to vary between brands. It seems to me that better/costlier strings have lower ductility and are more likely to break under abuse.

Not True. I've used GHS Precision Flatwounds with a 105 E on a string thru only body and have had no problems. I've also used D'addario Chromes with a 105 E and had no trouble. I've never strung thru the body with La Bella Flatwounds though,so I can't comment on that.
