La Bella Super Steps troubles

Sign in to disble this ad
I tried putting some La Bella Super Steps (.45-.105) on my Spector Euro, which was previously strung with Dunlop nickels (.45-.105). When I put the Super Steps on, almost every note on every string was either dead or had fret buzz. Can anyone explain to me why this would happen? It was so unplayable that I put the old Dunlops back on for the time being.

Did you raise the bridge saddles to compensate for the tapered section by the bridge? If not the strings will be closer to the fretboard which will cause buzzing and clacking. You would need to raise them enough to bring the strings to where the other strings were over the fretboard.

So every time I switch between tapered and non-tapered, I need a setup?

You may not need a complete set up, but you do need to raise the bridge saddles and bring the string height over the fretboard to where you like it with the old non-tapered set. Also, a tapered set may feel a bit more flexible....not always though. If you know what the string height was before with the old set...just raise them to that height and see how it feels.

I would. Anytime I change brands or types of strings a setup is needed. A good skill to learn.
