Original 54's would actually be one of the many varieties offered within the Labella DTF's line-up I believe ... they offer several different length, and guage options, the 54's the 'heaviest' of the guages offered ..

... if you have ??'s on each within the line-up, you may want to check with Jason @ bassstringsonline.com ... as he is a regular on here and has been extremely helpful with info for me, and also offers a discount to registered TB users when purchasing strings from him ...

I've been curious too if there's any difference in construction. It doesn't make sense that the .001 difference between the FMs and the "Original 1954" Ms equates to a $15 to $20 upcharge.

That's what I was wondering...

The width of the wraps is different, and there are other (proprietary) differences as well, according to LaBella. I do know that the FM sounds nothing like the M, at least to my ear. The FM is also stiffer, and sounds it.

Gauge, Tension, and Sound are markedly different. The 1954s are both incredibly tense and Dark sounding. I have them on my P-Bass at the moment and the DT mediums on one of my Jazz Basses. The regular DTs have a 'richer' or mid richer sound to my ear as the 1954s have thuddier/muddier sound that is more akin to the sound you hear on old stax/volt records. Both sound good and I don't think either is a bad choice. I am not certain if this differentce is entirely thanks to the gauge, tension,or construction though. They are by far the most tense string I have ever ever played.

Does anyone have a soundclip of the two?

... not sure I am reading your correctly .. the FM's are stiffer (and higher tension?) than the 1954's, even though the 54's are a heavier guage??

The FMs aren't higher tension, but they felt much stiffer to me. Perhaps because I was expecting them to be noticeably less stiff, but my fingers worked the 1954 Originals much easier.

for me it was the opposite....the 54's felt more stiff than the FM's...both sets sound great.

... thats why I was so surprised to read what tdiver said ... I have FL's and FM's and the FM's are significantly stiffer/heavier ... I have FS's but yet to try them on anything, but I cant imagine me going any heavier than the FM's ... those lead me pretty much to where the old Dean Markley flats I have take over, I think I could give somebody a concussion about 20 rows back with them and the right EQ'ing

Remember, though, that the FMs are .109 and the Ms are .110 - hardly a significant difference in diameter, so I wouldn't let that scare me off.
