LaBella Deeptalkin' 760M's - now what!

My instructor suggested that I try the LaBella flats. So I picked up a set (expensive strings) and put them on my P. Well, now the neck is bowed and if these are suppose to be low tension strings my fingers must really be weak. Seriously i took dA Chromes off for these and they felt great. But my problem is the trust rod. It's that old style with the "X" (guess you call that philips) and the body is to close to the adjustment area. First time I ever had to adjust the neck. This sucks!

La Bella makes various gauged flat sets, which did you buy? As far as adjusting the truss rod, if you can feed your self you can learn to adjust a truss rod quickly and correctly; If not, take it to a qualified tech.

Edit: I just noticed in the title to the thread you got the 760Ms -- the Jamerson set? If so those are about the stiffest flats made today. La Bella makes several much lighter sets of flats.

Took Chromes off my Jag and put 760FS on, had to do a minor truss rod adjustment but it was otherwise fine.

Take your bass to the luthier. Have them adjust the neck and intonation. Makes a world of difference.

Low tension?

I have those strings, in that gauge, and they are the absolute highest tension strings I've ever played. They do sound obscenely good though!

Ohhhhhhh I think I bought the wrong ones. I wondered why they are so tight!!

BTW: I took a big'o philips screwdrive and the rod wouldn't turn at all - am I suppose to take the strings off to get it to turn?

You don't need to loosen the strings. There are a few good videos on youtube like this one:

YouTube - Lakland Bass Setup With Carl Pedigo (Part 1 of 2)

You may need to actually straighten the neck a bit by hand while turning the truss rod. Also, you need a large flat head screwdriver because the T shaped Fender truss rod nut is not actually designed for a Phillips head.

The Jamerson set is stiff, thick, and wonderful.

I use the Extra Light 760's with a .128 B and they sound great and sustain nicely.
Yeah, the 760M's are way too much for even me to handle.

Those strings will pull on bass neck, that's for sure. I'm sure most of us have read what they did to Jamerson's bass. I had them on a pbass (62 RI) years ago, and took them off for that reason.

If you can't tighten the truss rod nut, try to loosen it and back it all the way out. Use a small wooden skewer ( or toothpick, or whatever) and dab some vaseline into the inside of the nut. Do not get it on the outside. Then tighten the truss to your needs.
I have these strings on my VM Jazz, and that neck is pretty movable. But a few adjustments make the bass very playable. Enjoy!
