Labella flatwound G not intonating

Sign in to disble this ad
You guys think I have a bad string here? I just put this set of Deep Talkin' Flats 39-96 on my P Lyte last night, and the G string required the saddle to be moved so far up on the bridge that I had to buy a longer screw for it. But I put the screw in, and when I got it intonated at the 12th fret, notes from the 2nd to 11th fret were way flat, and notes from the 14th fret up were way sharp. I put on the G string from the set of Chromes that were on it, and it intonated perfectly and played in tune up and down the neck, so I took off the Labellas and put the Chromes back on.

Only the Labella G had this problem, and I also put a set of Labella Hofner flats the same gauges on my Realistic violin bass and had no problems with intonation. This makes me think I have a whacked out string.

Do you guys agree? If so, what causes it to happen? In about 35 years of playing, this has never happened to me before.

Thanks!

short of letting the string settle a little, it sound like you have a bad string. I have had strings that needed a really extreme adjustment but never needed a new screw for the bridge. If you haven't already, I would contact labella or the store you got the strings from and see what they say.

Bad string IMO. I recently put some labellas of a similar gauge on my jazz bass. I extended the G more than I usually did in the past, but nothing so extreme as your situation (classic fender "L" bridge). I put the original 1954s on my Precision had to do little tweaking comparatively, which is surprising. On an alternate note I am absolutely loving them on both basses sonically. Cheers.

Labella has excellent CS. I called and left a message about the string, and "Uncle Bob" called back a little later and said the'yd send me a new string on Monday. It feels kind of comforting to have a new uncle...I thought I was down to one

Anyway, did a gig with my Realistic violin bass and the new Hofner Labellas I mistakenly bought for my Longhorn. Worked out pretty awesome. They should work out well with my P Lyte. I like that you can grease them up and they immediately start losing ring.

Really? They responded before you could say "Bob's your uncle?" (I couldn't resist...)

Haven't had to check out their CS yet; Out of the psckage, my Deep Talkin' set sounded (and still sound) great.

It's just a bad string, it happens. Those are great strings, I've used them for years and years. Every so often you get a bad one, no big deal. But the $.53 cents for the screw would REALLY bother me....:-)
