LaBella Jamersons and Squier Affinity P question

Sign in to disble this ad
I was just reading the thread that reviewed the LaBella Jamerson strings, and I was wondering - I have a Squier Affinity P with the smaller (and cheaper) tuners. Are those tuners adequate for such a large string as the Jamersons? And is the truss rod up to the job with the Jamersons?

Essentially you have the same design as the Fenders, so I see no reason why not to go ahead. I hadnt heard the tuners are smaller, but if they were a problem you could just replace them. The neck wood may be poorer in quality than a Fender, but I'm sure it has as much chance as any other bass for being ok, as they are normally straight grained anyway.

The reason I wouldnt use them on a more valuable bass, is the tension will cause you to need to tighten your truss rod quite a bit. This gets you closer to running out of room to adjust the truss rod. So when you have a couple of neck shifts (which also may be larger, because of the extra pull of large strings) you may well run out of adjustment eventually. But this really isnt an issue for you as its a bolt on, meaning you could change the neck if it this ever did happen.

So if you would like to buy them I would go ahead, as long as you know what to expect playing high tension strings.

I just put some heavy flats on one of those I got in trade.
Set up perfectly, with no problems.
Really sounds pretty darn good IMO.

It's not the tuners I would be worried about; it's the truss rod and the neck. It's my understanding the Jamerson's are super high tension. Sacrifices made with construction materials, to keep the price of the Affinity instruments down, would concern me.

The flats really brought this bass to life.
They have been on for about 3 weeks, and the neck has really held up good.
Kinda surprised at the quality actually.

jamerson's i'd avoid them and go for standard gauge flats...

i've met a friend who had 4 basses damaged by these set.. and Jamerson himself warped his 62 with these..
