Anyone using (or still using) Dean Markley SR2000's with a Lakland 55-02? If so, which gauges are you playing?

I'm using the medium lights. My favourite string so far, previously used mostly DRs and the Lakland stainless steels. You need to string through the bridge to get the tapers to sit on the saddles properly and it takes a bit of time to re-intonate the bass. Very nice strings, great string to string balance and nice feel. I'd like to try some light blue steels too, the medium lights bs's were just a touch heavy for me but a good string too.

How would you compare the SR2000's to the OEM Lakland stainless steels's?

The main differences to me are the feel, the balance and the tone in the midrange. I tend to play quite close to the bridge so I find the comparitively soft feel of the SRs gives easier control of dynamics. The balance of the strings is excellent. I always seemed to have trouble getting an even response no matter how I adjusted the action or the pickup. As for the tone, I put in a glock pre at about the same time as I started using the SRs so I might be a little off, but I hear the SRs as more open and with considerably more mid growl. The blue steels are a little more mellow in comparison but the SRs do settle after a bit. If you don't want to bother with ajusting the saddles to suit the taper cores on the SRs (it does take a while) the blue steels are definitely worth a try too. I'm going to give a set of lights a go.

I tried the Will Lee set on my 55-94. Sounded pretty great, but thats too heavy of a set for the 35" scale. Go for something lighter, and make sure to string through the bridge, not the body (or else your exposed cores will be useless).
