Light Strings Again!!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been using DR Low Rider Nickels for ever. Been using the 40-100 for a few years. Before, I was using standard 45-105.
I just slapped on a set of GHS Boomers Light (40-55-75-95) and these strings feel more taught than the heavier DRs I was using. Boomers have always had a thicker core or as they call 'em power core.

I was worried about the D string (.055) being too thin, but it feels like the DR's .060.

Anyway, any opinions on this? I do like how D'Addario puts their string tension on their package.

I wish all manufacturers put their tension data at least on their websites.

i have considered going thin......but it took so long to find the ones i like. so much money. don't you loose some power with a thinner E string. would it have a higher pitch ?

Yes, you cant use light strings unless you have one of those high tech amps with a volume knob .

Seriously though you can read peoples opinions on them here Does heavy guage strings = fatter tone?.

I use lights exclusively now. No complaints. Love the sound. Easier on my fingers.

To me, it's kind of a "Catch 22". Feel wise, I like light gauge strings for the left hand, but not for my plucking hand. With heavier or standard gauge string (45-105), I feel like I can pick better with my fingers. Lighter gauge strings just don't feel taught enough and I have to pick closer and closer to the bridge. And visa versa .
Tone wise, I think it depends on the manufacture. Like Rotosound Swing sound more punchier with a 40-100 than a 45-105 set. Same with D'Addario. I've tried all brands of DR and can't tell a difference.
