Liquid Glass Coated Bass Strings

Sign in to disble this ad
I came across an article on a new nanotechnological breakthru, Liquid Glass. http://www.physorg.com/news184310039.html If applied to bass strings, no moisture, dirt or oils could reach the strings. They could maintain there tone almost indefinetely.

Well 15-30 molecules deep of silica is going to be a lot less than 100nm, but I digress. (well, it could be, but if you are getting anal about it, it could be a single molecule that covers the entire area if the crystal was perfectly formed).

To get a coating which is uniform and that thin, it wouldn't be the easiest of manufacturing processes. The spray stuff they mention isn't going to give anywhere near that thin a coating either. I'm also not sure how well it would hold to the vibrations, but more mechanical testing would need to be tried on that front.

Either way, it boils down to it benig just another coated string. I know some people like them and the consistancy of tone, but they always sound "dead out the pack" to me. They never have the brilliance (or zing) that I'd expect new strings to have.

I also wonder how string vibrations would affect tsuch a coating. Re: coated strings. It is true that there may be less "zing" out-of-the-box, but the rate of decline in the sound quality should be very slow. I've played Elixirs before. They were bright enough to me. But the strings I like, steel roundwounds lost the zing much faster than the Elixirs.

I agree that steel rounds will loose the zing quite quickly. But to my ears, there isnt a great difference between dead uncoated strings and fresh coated ones. Consistancy is def. and up point, but it isn't the sound I'm after.

Wish I could afford to restring my basses every month
