Anyone know of a low price substitute for the ukulele bass strings popping up everywhere?
I'd think with the short scale length, there'd be a lot of options. Anyone tried to bypass the $25 or $30 replacement set and find something else from a standard set, or a set of specialty singles?
I know the timbre of the ukulele bass strings is unique, but come on, there's got to be an alternative that won't snap the neck or crack the top (particularly if you still have to add a pre-amp and amp to get decent volume). I presume the under-saddle pick-up's not an option - too tinny?
The original equipment is an asymmetrical, plain string. Wonder if something with a metal core would work. I was toying with looking into silk n' steel or mando strings. I even considered braiding them. Of course, I could try a couple of rubber bands....

Thanks for your insights.
