Lo Rider fret wear

I love the mid forward cutting tone of the DR Low Riders but hate the fret wear to my P-bass. Are there any nickle wound strings out there with the same tone as the stainless Low Riders?

I didnt know they made nickle lows. I've only seen the stainless ones in the music stores. I'll order some.

Might also try Black Beauties (or any of the ExtraLife DR's). They are coated HiBeams..still stainless steel, but coated. They'll have less tension though. If you want similar tension stick with Nickel Lo-Riders.

lo rider

I replaced my Lo Riders(which I liked alot) on my G&L SB-2, with Dunlop nickels because of what I read here on talkbass and the price I got($9.99), and I'm not looking back. They are just as bright, have a more full bottom, and are about the same tension.

Nickel Lo-Riders are one of my two favorite roundwounds. La Bella Slappers are the other - and they're similar in a lot of ways: both are high tension nickel-coateds

Gotta wonder what type of bass (brand) you have thats showing fretwear from the DR's. There not that rough, less so then rotosound swing66.

I havent really noticed any increased fret wear from using lo-riders. I have been using only those for the past 2 years or so.

I was thinking the same thing.

I had them on my 2010 Fender American Standard Precision for a month and the bad wear is on the 1st five frets. I'm trying the nickle low-riders now..so far so good!

Zone, 2 questions:

Do you use a hard case or gigbag? Sometimes there is more "wear" from scooting back and forth in a snug fitting bag than actual play wear.

How is the tension/stiffness of the nickels compared to the SS? I have a set of lite 5 SS's on my P5 at the moment and really like the feel.

I keep the bass in its hard case. I think the nickle's tension feels the same as the steels. I'm really digging them so far!
