Long tapewounds on a shortscale?

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to try a 5 string nylon set BEAD on a 4 string short scale.
The low string would be 135 so I would have to drill the tuning post, bridge and file the nut.
Will these fatties wrap around the posts without unraveling or breaking?

I'm not against cutting down a 34" set of strings to fit a shorter instrument - it's not my first choice, but it has been done and can be done. But this really makes little sense. A .135 string is like a tugboat hawser.

If it comes to drilling the tuner, my vote is a firm NO. I think it would be a better idea to find the heaviest gauge set of 4-string tapewounds. It's easy to shop for them at the online stores like juststrings.com.

Yep if you cut down long scale tapewounds to short scale then the tape comes off ... Bummer!

I, too, have a failure experience with doing just that - and it involved putting a long scale flatwound E on a medium scale bass with small tuning posts. I don't recommend it.
