Long vs. X-Long TI Flats for Fender Jazz Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I need some advice on which TI Jazz Flats to put on my new Fender Jazz Bass. I want to install the strings through the body, rather than just through the bridge, and I'm wondering whether the long-scale TI Jazz Flats have sufficient length or whether I need to go to the extra-long version. Anyone using these strings on a Fender Jazz who can help me with this decision?

Thanks,

John

I went with the super longs for my G&L 34" scale that went thru body. Worked fine. The only drawback might be a slightly smaller E string (0.096" vs 0.100"). I never missed the extra 0.004". And the A, D, and G are slightly bigger on the 36" scale set (JF365).

I sold that bass long ago but have used those strings on 34" scale bridge terminated Fender style instruments without any issue. Right now I have them on a P bass and they do not sound signifantly different than the ones I have on a J bass that are the JF344s.

Thanks for that information Dave. After a bit more research I decided to go with the JF344s and string through the bridge. I'm doubtful that stringing through the body adds significantly more sustain. In fact, my goal with the flats is to get more "thud" anyway.

I have the set of the regular 34 inch scales (.43-.100) strun through the body on my 54 P Bass reissue. It worked, but I had to take a razor blade on them sence the silk of the E string sat in the nut.
I put the Extra long (.44-.96?) on my 96 fretless Precision, but the E was way to long and the string itself is wrapped around the post almost completely. i know this is a no-no, but my guitar tech said that the string is so low tension anyway it probably won't break. I plan on ordering a .100 E and taking the razor blade to the silk on it and replacing the super long string.
